Why I Think Everyone Needs a Bit of Me Time

Have you heard the phrase “Getting some ‘me time’” before? It’s quite a common thing for people to say, but how many of you know what it actually means? Is sitting in front of Netflix classed as ‘me time’? Or, do you have to be meditating in the park? Because it’s such a grey area, lots of people assume they’re already getting enough of this so-called ‘me time’. Others don’t think they really need it. I want to tell you why getting some peace and quiet is so important. Along with some tips on how to achieve some real ‘me time’.


What is ‘Me Time’?

Let’s start off with what this thing actually is. Is it just having some time alone or peace and quiet? Or do you have to do something in particular? The thing is, ‘me time’ can be whatever you want it to be. The point is, you’re doing something for yourself. You’re being selfish for a few minutes a day. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you want to use that time to workout, then fine. If you want to use it to watch a movie, then that’s okay too. You could just use that time to take a nap or paint your nails. Whatever you like to do in order to relax or de-stress. There is no right or wrong way to do it. The only stipulations are that you must be doing it for you and you alone. You must be doing it by yourself, without anyone there to distract you. And, it cannot be work related!


The Importance of ‘Me Time’

So, why is it so important to get this five minutes to yourself? Think about how your weeks usually pan out. You’re probably working 9-5 during the week and then partying on the weekend. You’re doing housework in those spare few hours. There’s also the food shopping and the other chores to be done. Top this off with running around after friends or family members, doing favours. When you actually stop and take some time out for yourself? Probably not very often! You need to add some time into your hectic schedule to do whatever it is you want to do. Write it down, so you don’t forget. Whether this is watching Netflix or going for a run! If anyone tries to book you in for that hour, you tell them you’re busy. There’s no getting out of some precious alone time, I’m afraid!


‘Me Time’ Ideas

Now that you’ve got the basics sorted, it’s time to think about what you want to do with this free time. It’s a good idea to write a list of all the things you want to do when you get a spare five minutes. That way, you won’t waste half the time working out how you’re going to spend it! Here are some great ideas for that all-important ‘me time’:

  • Exercise – If you like exercising then this is the perfect example of a ‘me time’ activity. It also releases happy hormones, meaning you’ll feel amazing after.
  • Pampering – Why not pamper yourself during your spare hour this week? You could get a hot stone massage or paint your nails. Do something to treat yourself!
  • Movies and Popcorn – Snuggle up on the sofa with a big bowl of popcorn, and catch up on all your latest shows. Or, rent a movie. Preferably something with Ryan Gosling in it.


Are you convinced yet? It’s so important to get some time alone. To do the things you want to do! Next time you book in a full week’s worth of activities, don’t forget to schedule in some ‘me time’.
